Starting gymnastics as an adult is better than never starting at all... or is it?

Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved gymnastics. The balance, the strength, and the power needed to flip around the uneven bars, dance across the beam, flip over the vault, and tumble across the floor. It's magical.

I did recreational gymnastics as a kid but quit when I was 12 and was only a level 6 (which would be about a level 4 nowadays). I dreamed about competing but never quite made it. Fast forward about 20 years later. I'm no longer a kid... in fact, I have three of my own. I'm a stay at home mom and all of a sudden, at age 31, I could NOT stop thinking about getting back into gymnastics. My youngest was 6 months old and I was still nursing but I knew I had to find a gym because my soul was aching for this. I needed it. It took me a while to find a gym that offered an open gym that adults could attend but once I found it, I was in heaven! It definitely wan't easy but it brought so much joy to my life.

I was no longer dreaming about doing gymnastics again, I was doing it! In my 30s!!

There are people who say gymnastics is just for kids. They are SO wrong.

SO, what’s good (or bad) about starting gymnastics as an adult?

The Good

Actually, it’s not good….. it’s GREAT! Since I started doing gymnastics I’ve seen a lot of improvements in my life but 3 really stand out:

  1. My flexibility has increased dramatically which means I can move around freely without pain. I honestly feel younger in my 30s (almost 40s) than I ever did in my 20s!!

  2. My core has never been stronger. I have never felt stronger! And that physical strength has translated to mental strength as well! Win-Win!

  3. I have a heightened sense of body/air awareness. I'm a lot less clumsy now and I have amazing balance.

The Bad

Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything bad about starting gymnastics as an adult. You’ll be sore for sure and you'll also need to be patient! Flexibility takes time to earn and learning body control/air awareness takes time to learn BUT the fun you will have and the strength that will come make it SO worth it!!

Bottom line is this: It’s not too late to start gymnastics. And whether you’re already athletic or starting from scratch, my program will perfectly match your current skills and future goals. As a trainer who specializes in gymnastic strength training, my two main focuses are flexibility and gymnastic strength because without these, injuries are going to be a lot more prevalent. So many people like to skip these two things and go straight to learning the fun gymnastic skills and end up giving up because they're unable to advance quickly without the fundamental strength and flexibility needed. You need to work on ALL areas to really excel at this sport.
